Digital Media Yearbook 2023.

Group Project.

Project Overview

During second year of study, our year group were in charge of running and planning the annual Transmedia Exhibtion, which is a show for the Digital Media courses at the university. It gives all digital media students the chance to showcase their work and meet potential clients or employers. As second years, a designer and I decided to take the role of designing and creating the yearbook.

The Design of the Yearbook

My partner who I was working on the yearbook with had some initial ideas and designed the overall layout of the book. We thought it was best to create a 'tier' system depending on how much information students submitted for the yearbook. For those who did not submit, they would get the smallest box with the 'mascot' of their pathway, which were designed by our game design students. For those who just submitted a bio for themselves, they would get the medium sized box, along with either their mascot or a profile picture if they submitted one. For the students who submitted images of their work, and a bio would recieve the biggest size box, along with their mascot or a profile picture. Once the deadline had passed, it was time to put everyone's work into the yearbook. For this, we made the yearbook in Adobe InDesign as this was the most suitable software to use for this project. After all students were added, I decided to create a few mockups to portray how the yearbook could look if it was printed.

Project Reflection

Undertaking this part of the exhibtion was fairly challenging because it was not garunteed that everyone would submit work for us to put into the book. We also sent out notifications on Microsoft Teams regarding the deadline so that students knew how long they had left. Even though everyone knew the deadline, there are not as many examples of students work than we hoped. It was a challenge to work with InDesign too because we had to work in seperate files, as Adobe does not have a collaborate feature within their software. This meant that we had to split the work between us and then combine our files together to create one book. Luckily, putting everyone's boxes and work into the yearbook did not take as long as we thought, and we were able to complete it within an afternoon spent in the digital media studio. Using InDesign allowed me to strengthen my skills in this software, which I had not used before this project. We did not stick to a specific schedule/timeframe because we had to wait for the deadline to pass in order for us to be able to complete our project. Our aim was to be able to complete it by the Transmedia Event, which we managed to do with a week in advance.
